Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is distance learning?

Distance learning employs current technology such as television, computers, VCRs, and telephone, along with print media to bring the course content and the instructor to the learner.

Q. What is Northwest Florida State College's policy on distance learning support?

It is the policy of Northwest Florida State College to offer the highest quality service to our students.  Every effort is made to provide uninterrupted access to our web based classes; however, there may be times when your D2L classroom is not available to you.  This may be the result of routine server maintenance, Internet Service Provider issues, equipment failure, or other problems beyond our control.

While our goal is to provide you with uninterrupted classroom access, technical assistance is available only during normal business hours, or from your instructor during posted office hours.

Q. What if I have questions about the course material?

Your instructor is as close as your telephone or computer and is ready to assist you. The instructor assigned to each course is certified in the relevant subject matter and is available during posted hours to answer your questions via phone or computer, or to meet with you personally.

Q. Will I be studying on my own?

In a distance learning program, a certain amount of discipline and motivation is necessary in order to keep up with assignments. Each distance learning course is taught by a faculty member who will be available all through the course to answer questions and guide students through the material. Face-to-face meetings and/or telephone conferences are available every step of the way. For the first-time college student, distance learning can be a convenient way to start working toward a college degree.

Q. Will I ever need to go to campus?

Yes. There are several times during the course when attendance is required at the Niceville Campus: for orientation, mid-term and final examinations. We will work hard to make distance learning flexible and convenient for you.   Alternative testing and orientation can be arranged through the instructor or the Distance Learning Office for unique circumstances.

Q. When can I begin a distance learning course?

Distance learning courses are offered year round. They begin and end on the semester schedule.

Q. Who is the typical distance learning student?

Successful distance learning students are self-directed, mature, disciplined, and highly motivated people who can work independently with only a minimum amount of face-to-face contact or support from faculty and a minimum amount of interaction with other students.
